Can you use two phones as a baby monitor?

Updated

Yes, two phones make a working baby monitor. One phone stays in the nursery as the camera, and the other phone, usually your own, shows the live video and sound and gets the alerts. You pair them once with a QR code or a room code.

How it works

A baby monitor app runs on both phones, and each phone has a role:

  • The camera phone stays with your baby. In Awake this role is called Be the camera.
  • Your phone watches and listens. In Awake this is Watch & listen.

With Awake, the video and sound travel straight from one phone to the other. They aren’t uploaded or stored anywhere.

Step by step

  1. Install Awake on both phones. It’s free on the App Store (iOS 16.4 or later) and Google Play.
  2. Start the camera. On the phone that will stay in the nursery, open Awake and choose Be the camera. It shows a QR code and a room code.
  3. Connect your phone. On your own phone, open Awake and choose Watch & listen.
  4. Pair them. Scan the QR code with the scanner, or type the room code.
  5. Check the picture. Live video and sound should start on your phone within a few seconds.
  6. Place the camera phone. Choose a steady spot with a clear view of the cot, out of reach, and plug it in.

The connect screen, where you scan the QR code or type the room code.

Do both phones need to be on the same Wi‑Fi?

Both phones need an internet connection. Awake connects them directly, so they normally work together at home on your Wi‑Fi. If you can’t connect, try a different network, and see the support page.

What if the room code stops working?

Room codes can expire when the camera phone stops. Start the camera again on the spare phone, or tap Reset room code, to get a fresh code. Then scan or type the new one.

Can more than one person watch?

Yes. On the plan for up to three parents, three people can each watch the same camera phone on their own phones. Read more in sharing the baby monitor with a partner or grandparents.

Before you rely on it

  • Test it before bedtime, with the camera phone in its final spot.
  • Keep the camera phone plugged in.
  • Allow notifications on your own phone so alerts reach you.

Awake is not a medical device and does not replace adult supervision.
